Built in 1965, the Mineirão was fully refurbished for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and will now host ten matches for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Used by the two main football clubs in Belo Horizonte, Cruzeiro and Atlético Mineiro, the stadium is set in a beautiful location alongside Pampulha Lake and its surrounding monuments that were conceived by renowned Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. Belo Horizonte is approximately one hour by air from Rio.
