Bouncing to the Brazilian beat

The world's best trampolinists will be bouncing into Brazil in search of Olympic gold in 2016. Athletes hit heights of up to eight metres as they twist and somersault there way through complex routines in a bid to impress the judges and crowd alike. The Chinese have managed to do this best since the sport debuted at the 2000 Games but Australia could once again be a darkhorse to secure a medal in Rio.

Men to watch: Competing at his second Olympics, Blake Gaudry will take to the trampoline at the Games. Training in Adelaide, Gaudry will be aiming to better his feats at London where he finished 13th. In a dramatic event in 2012, he set a personal best and Olympic record for difficulty in his opening routine, only to tumble in his voluntary routine and miss the 8-man final.

Gaudry finished 14th at the 2015 World Championships to secure an Australian spot at the Rio Test Event in April. He then went on to secure a quota spot for Australia in Rio.

Qualification, Nomination & Selection

Australia failed to finish in the top eight at the 2015 World Championships but secured a quota spot at the Rio Test Event in April.

Competition Format & Events

Athletes must score the highest number of points for a routine which includes moves ranging from simple jumps in the pike, tuck or straddle positions to more difficult forward or backward somersaults and twists. The routine is marked out of 10 by five judges with deductions for incomplete moves, moving too far from the centre mark or poor form.

Each individual competition for men and women has two rounds - the qualification round and the final round. In the qualification round, athletes perform two routines with the eight best athletes advancing to the finals for one more routine, which determines the results of the competition.

Australia and Olympic Gymnastics - Trampoline

Australian gymnasts first competed in the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne, but it was not until the Games returned to Australia in 2000 that our first medal finally arrived. Ji Wallace won Australia’s first medal in gymnastics when he came second in the men’s trampoline in the discipline’s debut at the Sydney Games in 2000.
