Athlete Biography

Having made her W-League debut at just 15, Sam Kerr, now 22, has already represented her country in two World Cups and two Asian Cups and will now get her chance to perform on sport’s greatest stage at the Rio Games.

Kerr announced herself to the world when she scored a superb goal in the 2010 Asian Cup final as Australia went on to defeat North Korea on penalties and win the title for the first time.

She played for Perth Glory and Sydney FC in the domestic W-League competition between 2008-13 before getting the chance to play in the US. She lined up for the Western New York Flash in 2013 and 2014 before moving to her current side Sky Blue FC while also continuing to play in the W-League. Kerr remains in the top ten for most goals scored with 21 since the league began in 2013.

She was on the pitch in every minute of the Australian side’s historic run at the 2015 World Cup. Kerr was a constant threat in attack and set up one of Kyah Simon’s two goals against Nigeria as the side went on to win their first knockout match at a World Cup before they went down to Japan in the quarter-finals.

A foot injury ruled Kerr out of the Rio 2016 qualification campaign that saw the side move through to their first Olympic Games since Athens 2004. She returned to the field just weeks before the side’s opening match at Rio when she came on as a second half substitute for Sky Blue FC in late June.
