Athlete Biography

Jacob Clear will be looking for another Olympic gold when he contends his third Games in Rio after qualifying for the men’s K4 1000m event at the National Sprint Championships in Perth in March. He will be teaming up with duel Olympian and medallist Ken Wallace, London teammate Murray Stewart and Olympic debutant Lachlan Tame.

Clear was part of the London gold medal K4 1000 team, along with teammates Stewart, David Smith and Tate Smith. The Australians beat the Hungarians by 0.61 seconds to win the gold medal and were the only Australians to win gold at Eton Dorney at the 2012 Games.

Clear began kayaking in 2006 through surf lifesaving, which he started at the age of five as a nipper. He won the U19 single ski event at the 2003 Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships and won bronze in the open event the following year.

Switching his focus to sprint paddling, Clear won the U23 K1 1000m and K1 500m in his second year in the sport at the 2007 National Championships. He made his debut on the Australian senior team in 2007 and competed at the 2008 Olympic Games. Clear kayaked in the K2 500m in Beijing with Clint Robinson and placed 13th.

When he is not training or competing, Clear works as a plumber.
