Athlete Biography

Pistol shooter David Chapman will line up at his third Olympic Games in Rio having also competed at Sydney 2000 and London 2012. He won Australia’s Rio 2016 quota at the Oceania Championships after shooting the minimum qualification score and then claiming the bronze medal at the event.

Chapman competed at his first World Cup events in 1985 before giving up the competitive side of the sport for over a decade after getting married. His return to the sport was well warranted when he lined up at his home Olympic Games in 2000 where he finished 20th in the 25m rapid pistol.

He made the 2006 Commonwealth Games Team where he won a silver medal in the 25m rapid air pistol pairs event alongside Bruce Favell. Four years later in Delhi he won bronze in the same event with Bruce Quick.

Chapman and his daughter Hayley made history at the London 2012 Games when they became the first father-daughter duo to compete for Australia at an Olympic Games.

He was Commonwealth Games Champion when he won the rapid fire event and set a new Games record (23) in the final at the Glasgow 2014 Games. Consistent results throughout 2015 and the start of 2016 saw him win selection for the first Games on South American soil in August.
