Athlete Biography

Having cemented his position in recent years as one of the nation’s leading rifle shooters, Dane Sampson will line up at his second Olympic Games in Rio.

Sampson followed in his parents footsteps when he took up shooting at the age of 12. Long having dreamed of representing Australia at the Olympics, he made his Games debut in London where he finished 37th in the 50m rifle 3 position, 48th in the 50m rifle prone, 42nd in the 10m air rifle.

The Queenslander competed at his first Commonwealth Games in 2014 where he made the finals in each of the three rifle events. His best result came in the 50m rifle prone where he placed fourth as teammate Warren Potent won the gold.

Sampson secured Australia’s quota in the rifle 3 position competition after winning the Oceania Championships in late 2015. In a strong showing he also claimed the 50m rifle prone event at the site of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

He started 2016 positive results on the international circuit scoring two top-20 performances at the 2016 Pilzen Grand Prix before narrowly missing the final of the 50m rifle prone at the World Cup event in Bangkok.
