Athlete Biography

Chris Burton is heading into his second Olympic Games as a top contender being ranked second in the Eventing World Rankings. He will ride the nine-year-old black gelding Santano II at the Rio Games.

Currently living in Surrey, England the Queensland born athlete secured his second Olympic berth after a dominating 2015 season. He guided two horses to a top five finish at the 2015 Burghley Horse Trials CCI4* (TS Jamaimo and Haruzac) and took out the world record for the lowest ever finishing score at a three day event aboard Santano II, in the CCI2* in Camphire.

Burton finished second at the 2015 Blenheim Horse Trials CCI3* with Nobilis 18, placed 4th at the Luhmühlen CCI4* with Graf Liberty and helped Australia claim bronze in the 2015 FEI Nations Cup Eventing Series.

Burton recorded his first 3* win in 2005 and went on to win the Australian International Three Day Event CCI4* in 2008 aboard Newsprint. He made his international debut for Australia at the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Kentucky where he finished midfield on Holstein Park Leilani.

The lover of cold weather, snow and skiing moved to the United Kingdom in 2012 with Holstein Park Leilani in a bid to make the London Eventing Team – a move that came to fruition when the 31-year old rode at his debut Olympic Games in 2012. He placed sixth in the team event and 16th in the individual.
